Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Priyanka Chopra were declared the new faces of the Incredible India campaign following the expiration of Aamir Khan’s contract as brand ambassador. The Centre did not show any interest to renew the contract as it wants a ‘non-controversial’ person to be the face.
There was much hullaballoo around Khan’s removal as brand ambassador, which was seen as a reply to his remarks on intolerance in India. However, on 6 January this year Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma confirmed that the cessation was because Khan’s campaign contract had expired.
While media reports suggested that Bachchan would replace Aamir as the campaign’s face, Chopra’s name comes as a surprise. An announcement on the new brand ambassadors will most likely be made after Republic Day. Like Khan, Bachchan and Chopra too will not charge a fee to be part of this campaign.
When the news broke of him no longer being the face of the campaign, Khan had issued a statement saying whether he remains the brand ambassador or not, “India will remain incredible”.
