Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Saturday, began the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) campaign in Assam with a packed schedule of four rallies in Tinsukia, Majuli, Bihpuria, Bokakhat and a meeting with the locals at Jorhat. He will become the first Prime Minister to visit Majuli, an island located between river Brahmaputra and Lohit.
At the rally in Tinsukia, Modi said his fight is not against Tarun Gogoi but against poverty and corruption. BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Sarbananda Sonowal is contesting from Majuli assembly constituency.

Highlights of Modi’s speech at Tinsukia:
- Assam was one of the most prosperous states at the time of independence. Today, it is one of the poorest.
- Assam election is a personal loss for me because I have to send one of the most capable ministers Sarbanand Sonowal for campaigning.
- This is surely going to benefit Assam. There is one wave in Assam, one Anand in Assam and that is ‘Sarbanand’.
- There are many villages in Assam which don’t even have electric poles. The situation in Assam will change if 3 things are done – education to poorest, income to youths and medicines to old.
- When I was a tea-seller, I sold Assam tea to people, therefore I am indebted to Assam.
