Growing up, you have seen her juggle work and home and always wondered how she aced it all. When you cried to her about your problems, not once did she tell you, ‘You are a boy and boys don’t cry’. In fact, she let you be, because as a mother, she knew that it was perfectly okay for you to cry. She never told you that since you are a boy, blue was your colour and pink, your sister’s. The only thing that mattered to her was filling up your life with colours.

While we can go on and on of all the things boys learn from their mothers, here are 5 things you have MOST definitely learnt from her.

1. Respect for women: She showed you that it was okay for women to work, be independent and take their own decisions. A largely patriarchal society not withstanding, she carved her own niche and in the process, proved it that women can do it all. She never acknowledged terms such as ‘fairer sex’ or ‘weaker sex’. And while doing all this, she didn’t have to really sit you down and teach you to respect women. She simply led by example and you automatically learnt to respect other women around you.

2. Being a sensitive and caring partner: It is from her that you learnt that egos have no place in a relationship. All you need is care, sensitivity and some kindness. She taught you that it was perfectly okay to say ‘Sorry’ to your partner if you were wrong and that there was nothing ‘unmanly’ about it.

3. Sharing the responsibilities and chores at home: Not once did she tell you that cooking and cleaning is for girls and that boys like you should only do ‘masculine’ work like changing bulbs. To this end, she made sure that you contribute to household chores as much as your sister.

4. Treat boy and girl child equally: You may have noticed how your mother always gave you and your sister an equal chance to voice your opinions. That’s because she didn’t prefer one over the other. She believed both of you are equally capable and didn’t discriminate between the two of you.

5. Dream big and work hard for them: She knew it’s a ruthless world out there, but that didn’t stop her from encouraging you to dream big. The only advice she ever had for you is ‘work hard’. Limitations and deterrents may come and go but persistence will always pay is what she made you believe in. Each time you failed, she egged you to do better and each time you succeeded, she was your biggest cheerleader.

To the woman who taught you all this and more, here’s a wonderful tribute by Star Plus - #MadeByMom

The video rightly says ‘Ladkon ki sahi parvarish sahi soch se shuroo hoti hai’. After all, you are what you are because of your mom’s #NayiSoch and hats off to her for that.
