Yes, we hear you! For something as permanent as a home, why would you bother about seasonal trends? But the way we see it, your home needs renewed vigour every once in a while. To claim that space and feel the belonging as intensely as ever, you do need to add some powerful iterations every now and then.
With that feeling in mind, we set out to hear international trend forecaster Li Edelkoort, among the 25 most powerful voices in the global design world, at the recently concluded India Design ID 2017, eager to know what are the new ideas and concepts that our homes can embrace. We list a few of them here, adding Indian examples so our readers can seek some local inspiration.
Talking Textiles
Furniture is vital, but textiles are life. They add charm to every space where they are used in. Design experts can’t emphasise enough on the importance of textiles in making a house a home. Handcrafted textiles with dramatic textures still top the list in interior design rules.
Unshapely Mirrors
Who would have thought mirrors could assume any other shape other than the boring sphere? Well, trust Li to tell you otherwise. Unshapely mirrors are going to be a conversation starter this year. They look dramatic and stylish, and lend an unusual personality to the walls.
Textured Materials
It isn’t smooth. In fact, it comes as close as an object can come in imitating a textured life. We spotted Portside Cafe’s leather pieces with an unevenly texture, and we believe they would look stunning in a minimalistic white setting.
Ceramic Love
Ordinary, imperfect, poetic and deeply philosophical are the handmade ceramics by Delhi-based visual storyteller Aman Khanna. Khanna’s label Claymen cites the hard working, minimum wage man and his ordinary struggles as its inspiration. He works with clay, a material that easily dissolves into the earth. Claymen’s minimalistic style is being talked about quite a bit in design circles these days.
Touch Wood
In 2017, objects that reinterpret wood, and really challenge the material in different ways will be in focus. Like this Minar Bar by Dwell Duo and the textured wooden tables by Portside Cafe.
Dramatic Glass Experiments
Art is an experiment. And maybe that’s why glass installations have been included in this as well? This stunning one by Klove really proves the point.
