India’s Dr Soumya Swaminathan has been appointed World Health Organisation’s Deputy Director General for Programmes.
This is the second highest position in the organisation, directly below the Director General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who took over the post this July, reported Scroll.
According to The Scroll's report, Dr Swaminathan is the director general of the Indian Council of Medical Research, a paediatrician and famous for her research in tuberculosis. She has more than 30 years of experience in clinical research and was earlier the director of the National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Chennai.
Dr Swaminathan has been hugely instrumental in intensifying the focus on tuberculosis research, reported The Scroll. She has created a central organisation for tuberculosis research in India called "India TB Research and Development Cooperation."
It is also interesting to note that Soumya Swaminathan is the daughter of the MS Swaminathan – the individual who pioneered the Green Revolution in India.
