We bet you can’t imagine Sunny Deol outside his stereotypically raging Punjabi avatar with a dhai kilo ka haath. Which is why you absolutely must watch the trailer of this interestingly controversial film Mohalla Assi. Sunny Deol’s soft spoken Banarsi Sanksrit masterji persona takes you by surprise, and the easy flow of abuses in almost every dialogue will leave you gasping.

Director Chandraprakash Dwivedi’s film about modern day Varanasi has been through quite the struggle in its making. Though the film had reportedly been shot in 2011, it had to be shelved for a few years due to financial constraints.

Interestingly, the film revolves around Deol’s attempt to keep the holy city from turning into a picnic spot for tourists who only wish to smoke up and take a touristy dip in the Ganga. What’s turning this simple plot into a potential whirlwind of controversies is that the entire film is punctuated with expletives. It’s not only Sunny Deol, Sakshi Tanwar and Ravi Kissen who are seen cussing, lord Shiva too liberally uses swear words!

But this excessive use of gaalis is the manner of speaking in this part of Benaras. So what’s the controversy about you might wonder? Funnily enough, the director, Chandraprakash Dwivedi is a member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and we all know how restrictive the Censor Board is about bad language. We’re curious to know whether this film will see the light of day or be banned before its release?
