Dharamvir Bharti’s classic novel Gunahon Ka Devta is all set to be adapted to the silver screen. The film would be directed by Dharmendra Shekhar Ojha, and would be based on the iconic Hindi novel which recounts the passionate yet tender love story of Chander and Sudha is set in the late 1940s.
Interestingly, a film had been made based on the novel decades ago starring none other than Amitabh and Jaya (then Bhaduri) Bachchan, but unfortunately, it never saw the light of day.
When I was a child, I used to hear a lot about Bharati’s novel, Gunahon Ka Devta. During those days in Allahabad and later in Delhi, my mother used to perform in plays of Shakespeare which my father had translated - the four main tragedies of Shakespeare. I read Gunahon Ka Devta at that time, and had that wish of doing a play on it, if there would be one.Amitabh Bachchan, Actor
Bachchan’s dream came true when he was actually signed up for an adaptation, that too opposite the then bigger star Jaya Bhaduri.
By the grace of God, a few days after I entered the film industry, I got an offer to do a role in a film being made on it. I got the role of Chandar and another delightful part was that the role of Sudha was given to Jaya.... We had not got married at that time, but we worked on the film with a lot of dedication…. The shooting took place in Allahabad during the summer. More people knew Jaya since she was a bigger star than me, but still not many knew her and absolutely no one knew me. About 7-8 reels of the film were made but, unfortunately, it couldn’t be completed due to some reasons which we always regret about.Amitabh Bachchan
Reportedly, Rekha has also been signed to play one of the leading characters in the film.
Ojha, who has started the pre-production work and would begin shooting next year, is now keen to sign Big B for the role of Sudha’s father in the film.
I shall be grateful if megastar Amitabh Bachchan accepts our proposal to work in this film. We want to cast him as Sudha’s father Dr Shukla.Dharmendra Shekhar Ojha, Director
It would sure be a very nostalgic trip for Bachchan. Watch this space for more.
