Hitchki actor Rani Mukerji was the special guest to kick off this year’s Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) in Australia. She hoisted the Indian flag in Federation Square, joined by Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and IFFM director Mitu Lange along with a crowd of fans.
Rani wore a floral printed saree at the event with a white shawl over her shoulder. After joining in a rendition of the national anthem, she gave a small speech. Rani spoke about how humbled she was unfurling the Indian flag in Australia.
I think it’s a matter of national honour for anyone to hoist their national flag. And the fact that I’m doing it in Australia so far away from home is even more special and makes it more patriotic.Rani Mukerji
Rani also thanked her fans for supporting her, and remembered the song ‘Chodo kal ki batein’ from her late father’s film Hum Hindustani. Ram Mukherjee passed away in October last year. “I really miss him here today,” she added.
Apart from Rani, IFFM is being attended by Bollywood celebs like Vicky Kaushal, Rajkumar Hirani and Richa Chadda. The opening film of the festival is Love Sonia, starring Richa, Freida Pinto and Rajkummar Rao.
