Inspired by the real-life story of Udham Singh, a revolutionary belonging to the Ghadar Party, Shoojit Sircar’s upcoming biopic is based on the legend and is called Sardar Udham Singh. The first look of the period film, which will feature Vicky Kaushal in the titular role, is out. Dressed in a long overcoat, wandering the grey streets of England, Vicky Kaushal’s clean-shaven look is sure to win hearts.
Known for mobilizing Indians to fight against the Colonial rule and assassinating British officer Michael O’Dwyer who had ordered English troops to open fire at the people peacefully protesting in Jallainwala Bagh on 13 April, 1919, Udham Singh was a significant part of the Indian freedom struggle. Although, his efforts have largely gone unnoticed in the history of India.
Originally, Sarda Udham Singh was supposed to star Irrfan Khan. However, that couldn’t work out due to Irrfan’s health and so Vicky Kaushal was later brought on board to take the project forward.
In an interview with Mumbai Mirror, Shoojit Sircar spoke about the process of working on such films that require accurate research. Sircar admitted that it was very difficult to re-create a bygone era as there are very few records, and a lot of which is speculative. He also said that he is looking forward to this as it’s his first period film.
The shooting of Sardar Udham Singh began in London and has now moved onto Russia. The cast and crew will also be shooting in parts of Germany, Ireland, and India in the coming 6-7 months.
Sardar Udham Singh is scheduled to release in 2020. It is written by Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhttacharya. It will be produced by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar, a Rising Sun Films Production.
Vicky Kaushal has previously starred in films like Sanju, Masaan, Uri: The Surgical Strike.
