Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Bajirao Mastani, has become one of the most anticipated films of the year. People are latching on to the tiniest updates of the movie.
On Sunday, Pinga, a song starring Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra was released. In the video, the two actresses – inspired by the famous ‘Dola Re’ from Devdas– have a dance-off. Sadly, however, this one fails to evoke the same excitement and whistles. We give you five reasons why.
Dola a Better Song
Dola Re has had such a great impact on people that even 13 years since its release, it was trending on Twitter. Right after Pinga’s release, people started comparing it with Devdas and in no time the song appeared on Twitter’s top trends. Will Pinga have such an impact? Don’t think so.
Pinga, somehow, fails to hit the right chord, whereas Dola Re is awesome from the very first line. To make matters worse, the song is not even original, it’s a copy of an old Marathi film song, Latpat, Latpat.
Dola Had the Moves
Even now when people listen to Dola Re, they will break into the signature step with much ease. The signature move was an instant hit, people did it over and over again at weddings and parties, sometimes solo and the other times in groups.
The dance in the song is a combination of Kathak and Bharatnatyam and is called Nautwary and was choreographed by none other than the queen of Bollywood dance, Saroj Khan.
Khan took home 17 awards including a national award for the Dola Re choreography. In her own words she said, “Out of the 2000 songs that I have choreographed, Dola Re has been the toughest.”
Remo D’souza doesn’t even come close. Pinga is a prominent folk dance of women in the state and it is performed at traditional festivals like manglagour, bhondla and nag panchmi. In this, Remo has failed to do justice to Pinga. He has ended up mixing Lavani and Pinga, with only a few steps of Pinga here and there.
Dola Looked Regal
Dola Re was perfectly lit up and looked grand, the poor light setting and dull walls in the song Pinga have failed to match up to our expectations of Bhansali. Dola re looked more festive and expensive. The set itself had a celebratory vibe to it which garnered more attention. The Pinga set, on the other hand, looks unexciting. Definitely a huge letdown in terms of the art direction.
Dola Had Madhuri!
Another reason why Dola Re is better than Pinga is because it has Madhuri Dixit. We agree that it’s unfair, but we can’t help the number of fans Madhuri has. While watching Pinga, one does miss Madhuri, which makes you want to watch Dola Re again.
Dola Had Chandramukhi & Paro
The jodi of Chandramukhi and Paro beats Mastani and Kashibai hands down. The Madhuri-Aishwarya duo nails the steps, expressions and grace that Priyanka and Deepika fail to do.
To sum up, Pinga had all the necessary ingredients but not enough spice.
