Political heavyweights, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and SP supremo Mulayam Singh faced a major setback in the District Panchayat and Block Panchayat polls in Uttar Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Congress failed to win any of the eight seats in Rahul Gandhi’s Lok Sabha constituency Amethi.
SP and BSP were reportedly leading in the district.
An independent candidate defeated the BJP candidate in Jayapur, a village near Varanasi adopted by PM Modi last year.
Family members of SP government’s ministers like Manoj Kumar Pandey, SP Yadav and party leader Vidyawati were trailing.
Minister Kailash Yadav’s son was trailing while incumbent district panchayat chairman of Ghazipur and SP leader Shishupal Yadav was also on the verge of defeat, reports IANS.
Counting for District Panchayat and Block Panchayat elections is underway in 819 block headquarters amidst tight security in Uttar Pradesh. The election was held in four phases in October and the counting of the paper ballots started on Sunday.
