The Army on Wednesday shot dead a member of the hardliner faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Defence ministry spokesman Lt Col Suneet Newton said the killing took place in Talpathar village and that an AK-81 assault rifle, a magazine and other unspecified items were also recovered from the self-styled Sergeant Major Rongmon Asom, reports ANI.
Authorities are in the process of carrying out search operations for more members.
The United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) has been active since 1979. About a decade later, it was banned by the Indian government in 1990 as a terrorist-organisation.
Under the leadership of its current Commander-in-Chief Paresh Baruah, ULFA, continues to pursue its violent methods. Baruah has been sentenced to death by a Bangladesh court.
