- In a surprise appointment, former London mayor Boris Johnson was appointed the British foreign minister by the country’s new Prime Minister Theresa May on Wednesday. Additionally, Euroskeptic Conservative lawmaker David Davis has been named the UK minister for EU exit.
- Johnson was a leading figure in the victorious ‘Leave’ campaign, in the ‘Brexit Referendum’ last month and had been considered the front-runner to become prime minister himself, before being sidelined within the ruling Conservative Party.
- Johnson’s role in Britain’s negotiations over its future relationship with the European Union is likely to be limited because May is expected to create a new ministerial post focusing exclusively on negotiations associated with Brexit.
- Johnson has not held any cabinet post previously. He is succeeding Philip Hammond who has been named the Finance Minister.
