As the world was reeling with the historic decision of Britain to opt out of the European Union, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed similar views back home.

He took to Twitter calling for a referendum on statehood for Delhi.

Voicing a similar opinion, AAP leader Ashish Khetan said “after UK’s referendum on EU exit, it’s time to have a referendum on full statehood for Delhi”.

The AAP has been demanding full statehood for Delhi for a long time now, as a result of which, it has been in a bitter political war with the Centre.

Currently, law and order, including police, land and civic bodies are controlled by the Union government. Statehood for Delhi has also been a priority for the Aam Aadmi Party since its campaign manifesto.

On 19 May, the party released a draft Bill seeking full statehood and appeared optimistic about its execution.
