Afroz Ahmed Lone, a Jammu and Kashmir police constable, was killed by a mob protesting the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.

The police armoured vehicle he was driving was pushed into the river Jhelum, allegedly by a mob in Sangam, Anantnag.

Lone, survived by his parents and three sisters, had been posted at the Sangam police station only three months ago. Coming from a poor family, Lone had joined the police force in 2011.

Hailing from Tik Bagh locality from Mattan town of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, Lone was a talented and well known cricketer in the district, much like Wani, who was a locally known cricketer before he left to join Hizbul.

However, unlike Wani’s funeral which drew thousands of people out of their houses, Lone’s death hardly created a ripple in the Valley.
