For the first time in the history of Gujarat’s state board examinations, the disciplinary committee of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Board (GSHSB) barred a class 12 student from taking his exams for two years, after he was discovered having taken a selfie in the exam hall.
He has been declared failed in all the subjects he appeared for in 2017, and can re-appear for the same only in 2019.
According to a report in The Times Of India, CCTV footage from the exam centre revealed the student’s act, when it was reviewed by the disciplinary committee.
Since 2014, the GSHSB has made it mandatory for a disciplinary committee consisting of the district education officer, the district primary education officer, and the principal of the District Institute of Education and Training to review the CCTV footage in all the examination centers.
In the footage reviewed, the student, Vatsal Karamta, was seen taking his phone out of his back pocket and clicking a few selfies of himself, before putting it back inside and resuming with his exam.
Speaking to The Times Of India, JN Rajgor, the joint director of the GSHSEB said:
He has confessed to sneaking in the mobile phone against the rules, and thus, he has been declared failed in all papers he took this year.
The GSHSB has made it mandatory for the exam process to be recorded in the all the centres through CCTV cameras or tablets. This year’s analysis of the footage revealed that around 850 class 12 students, and 1,150 class 10 students have flouted the exam rules.
