A 45-year-old man fell to his death in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on Saturday evening, after a water tanker ran over him when his motorcycle got stuck in a pothole.

The victim has been identified as a Praveen – a resident of Uttam Nagar’s Mohan Garden.

Praveen was riding his motorcycle when he was unseated as he went over a big, waterlogged pothole near Square Mall in Vasant Kunj. He was then run over by a tanker at around 7:30 pm, a police official said.

A tweet by a witness revealed the graphic nature of the accident:

Preliminary investigation revealed that Praveen was riding a motorcycle, which fell into the big pothole near Square Mall in Vasant Kunj, but before he could get up, he was run over by the tanker and his head was crushed, a police official said.

Doctors reported that Praveen’s cause of death was a head injury and excessive bleeding.

A case has been registered under sections 279, 337 and 304-A of the IPC at the Vasant Kunj police station.

However, the driver of the tanker is still at large.

The government should take up the matter. Its their responsibility to construct proper roads in monsoon.

Earlier, the Delhi traffic police had identified 167 potholes in the capital prone to waterlogging.

But the MCDs had denied any responsibility, claiming that only two of those areas fell under the jurisdiction of the three municipal corporations functioning in the city.

On Sunday however, restoration work was underway on the pothole that caused the accident, signalling perhaps that potholes can be fixed, if only a horrible enough incident happens.
