The owners of Parle have decided to shut the production unit of Parle G in Mumbai’s Vile Parle area. The 87-year-old landmark in Mumbai had stopped producing the widely consumed ParleG biscuits two moths ago, reports The Economic Times.
Arup Chauhan, Executive Director of Parle Products, told The Economic Times:
Production at the time of closure was negligible. It didn’t make commercial sense to keep it running.
The local factory had lost production capacity over the past few years, the report claims. The brand worth Rs 10,000 crore has production units all over the country.
The factory, which is spread over 10 acre of land, was home to the brand’s headquarters and employed 300 employees. All 300 employees have accepted Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) and the company will retain the land.
However, the land will not hold the factory that got its name from the region and in return gave it a signature aroma.
The residents of Mumbai, who have known the Vile Parle air to be filled with the baking smell, are in mourning.
