With the Supreme Court, the Maharashtra governor, and the president rejecting Yakub Memon’s plea, the 1993 Mumbai blast accused was executed earlier today.

Here is a timeline of his case.

July, 2007: A special TADA court awards death sentence to Yakub Memon.

March 21, 2013: The Supreme Court upholds the death sentence of Yakub Memon.

October, 2013: Yakub Memon applies for a presidential pardon.

May 21, 2014: President Pranab Mukherjee rejected the mercy plea of Yakub Memon following recommendations from the Maharashtra government and Union Home Ministry.

July 21, 2015: The SC rejected Memon’s second review petition. He filed a mercy petition with the Maharashtra governor on same day as well.

July 23: Yakub Memon’s lawyers move Supreme Court seeking a stay on his execution on the grounds that the death warrant had procedural lapses and it was issued before he could exhaust all his legal recourses.

July 27: Politicians, retired Judges and activists write a letter requesting the President to commute death sentence of Yakub Memon.

July 28: A two-judge bench of Justice A R Dave and Justice Kurian Joseph delivered a split verdict on Memon’s curative petition and referred the matter to Chief Justice H L Dattu to form a larger bench. Chief Justice Dattu formed a three-judge bench.

July 29: Yakub Memon filed another mercy plea before President Pranab Mukherjee, as a three-judge Supreme Court bench rejected his curative petition. His plea has been rejected by the president. He is scheduled to be executed tomorrow.
