After indirectly snubbing BJP leader Subramanian Swamy in his interview with Arnab Goswami on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched a rather unambiguous attack on political ‘hotheads’ who make extreme comments, in the name of the party.

Modi’s remarks came in the context of the Uttar Pradesh 2017 polls, when Goswami asked Modi if statements made by some members of the BJP, Sangh Parivar, or independent groups would add a communal colour to the elections.

In response, Modi said that the media should stop making “heroes out of those people who make such comments.”

Don’t make them heroes, they will stop. why do you make them so big? I see such statements by people on TV, whose faces I haven’t even seen and they end up becoming spokesmen on TV. I don’t know why such people are encouraged.

This was the first time a sitting prime minister gave an interview to a private Indian news channel after assuming office.

Touching upon several issues including the NSG debate, talks with Pakistan and the infamous attacks by Swamy on RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, Modi criticised any attempts by self-styled spokesmen to speak on behalf the BJP.
