Three Indian students were stabbed in Uzzhorod in Ukraine at around 3 am on Sunday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. Two of them – Pranav Shaindilya and Ankur Singh – succumbed to injuries while Indrajeet Chauhan, the third student, is recovering, according to MEA officials.
One of the deceased, Pranav Shaindilya’s family has appealed to the government of India to bring back his body to India as early as possible. His father, Pramesh Sharma is an editor of a local weekly newspaper while his elder sister has completed her medical studies from Ukraine. His younger brother is a law student.
The students from Uzzhorod Medical College were stabbed by Ukrainian nationals who have now been apprehended, according to Chauhan’s statement.
Our Embassy in Kiev was informed of this incident around 1100 hrs on 10 April 2016 and has been trying to ascertain the facts from the police, the University authorities, and other local contacts. The Embassy is also taking up the matter related to the safety of Indian students strongly with the Foreign Office of Ukraine.Excerpt from MEA statement
The MEA statement also said, “Passports/documents of the three Indian students and blood-stained knife were reportedly recovered from the Ukrainian nationals.”
The ministry has said that necessary arrangements are being made to complete the formalities and bring the bodies of the two students back to India.
