Heavily armed militants launched a brazen attack on an air force base in Peshawar, early morning today, killing at least 17 people. The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
The attack, one of the major terror assaults on a military facility, also left 13 terrorists dead, military spokesperson Major General Asim Bajwa tweeted.
A group of gunmen wearing explosive-laden jackets and armed with hand-propelled grenades, mortars, AK-47 rifles attacked a guard post as they tried to fight their way into the Badaber air base on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The terrorists entered the camp from two points, splitting into sub-groups, sparking a fierce gunbattle with security forces, Bajwa said.
At least 22 people, including eight soldiers and two senior army officers, were injured in the attack.
