'Suicide Mat Karna Bas': Inside The Kota Crisis

At least two lakh students from across India move to Rajasthan's Kota annually to prepare for entrance exams like the JEE and NEET. A small percentage of them make it to India's elite engineering and medical colleges, most of them settle for lesser-known colleges, some drop out altogether, but every year a significant number of students die by suicide – bringing to light the grim reality of India's coaching capital. So far, in 2023, at least 29 students have died by suicide – the highest number of student deaths in eight years. With this Special Project 'Suicide Mat Karna Bas', The Quint seeks to dive deep into the underlying factors contributing to the alarming rate of student suicides. This involves investigating the role of coaching centers, parental expectations, societal and financial pressures, and most importantly, the education system, in pushing students to the brink. Support us to bring to light the much-needed stories on mental health and academic stress.
