Politicians from across party lines welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a death sentence awarded to four men convicted in the 2012 Delhi gangrape case. Reacting to the court’s order, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi said that the decisive judgement would “embolden women across the country.” Echoing her, Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal said the order was akin to a “tight slap” on all those who perpetrate sexual violence on women.
