Shubman Gill orchestrated Kolkata Knight Riders’ wonderful batting display against Mumbai Indians as the hosts got past the three times IPL champions by a margin of 34 runs.
Batting first KKR posted a total of 232/2 in 20 overs, with 19-year old Gill leading the attack against MI bowlers with 76 runs off 45 balls (6X4’s, 4X6’s).
The innings garnered him a lot of applause from fans and cricket fraternity worldwide. Former Indian World Cup winning opener, Kris Srikkanth also took to Twitter after KKR-MI game on Sunday and came with some big words for the U-19 World Cup winning youngster.
The 59-year old said that he was very impressed with Gill and that he has all the traits to become a great cricketer.
Srikkanth, who was Team India’s chief selector during the 2011 World Cup said had entrusted 21-year old Virat Kohli and the the youngster had delivered in the very first game of the tournament by hitting a century against Bangladesh.
At the beginning of 2019, during the New Zealand tour, Indian skipper, Virat Kohli had said, “I saw him (Shubman) bat in the nets and I was like wow I was not even ten per cent of that when I was 19.”
In 12 games for KKR this season, Shubman Gill has scored 222 runs with a strike rate of 128.32 and has scored two fifties.
Earlier this month, Gill hadn’t been included in the 15-member Team India squad for the 2019 World Cup in England. The 19-year old had then said that he was unperturbed by missing out on a World Cup spot.
