The new Tripura governor Tathagata Roy who was appointed on Wednesday is already in a bit of a controversy even before he assumed charge.

Roy who is an avid Twitter user landed in trouble for some of his earlier tweets speaking about love jihad and the islamisation of Bengal.

His detractors started a campaign on Twitter on Thursday with the hastag #RecallTathagataRoy.

Speaking to NDTV, he said, “They may want to hang me or behead me but their convoluted interpretation is wrong”.

Roy defended his tweets but also said that his ideology will not have an impact while he is discharging his constitutional responsibilities as Governor.

That was a different person, a political person. I said things my politics and beliefs dictated, I don’t regret them. Now I’m here on a constitutional post and I’m a changed person now. My political entity is behind me.
– Tathagata Roy, Tripura Governor

He also said “Beliefs, like parentage, cannot change but they can be on the back burner. They will not have any part to play in the duties I perform”.

Asked if the tweets would have an impact on his appointment as Governor roy said, “The Constitution provides for a consultation with the state government before appointment of a governor. Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke with the Chief Minister and he did not voice any such objection. Therefore that is the end of the controversy”.
