1. Narkeldanga: Fake Currency Dealers Arrested, Firearms Seized

The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police arrested fake Indian currency dealers from Narkeldanga Police Station area on Sunday, 13 January.

“Counterfeit notes with face value of Rs 60,000, three improvised 7mm semi-automatic pistols, 21 rounds of live cartridges and 14 semi-finished firearms were seized from their possession,” a senior STF official said.

They have been nabbed under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 489B (using as genuine forged or counterfeit currency), 489C (possession of forged counterfeit currency) and Arms Act.

2. I-T Notice to Durga Puja Committees: TMC to Take Put Protest Rallies

Days after the Income Tax department served notices to Durga Puja committees in Kolkata, asking them to declare their source of donations and file TDS, the Trinamool Congress has decided to take out protest rallies in Birbhum and Burdwan on Thursday, 17 January.

“The prime minister is trying to stop Durga Puja in West Bengal. We don’t know what kind of a prime minister he (Modi) is. On 17 January, protest rallies will be taken out in 25 blocks in Birbhum district,” TMC’s Birbhum District President Anubrata Mondal said.

The party will also take out similar rallies in a few areas of East and West Burdwan districts.

3. Dhakuria Footbridge Shut For Overhaul

The foot overbridge at Dhakuria, opened to public in 2004, has been closed for restoration. A civic official said an agency with whom the KMC had signed a PPP agreement for construction of Dhakuria FOB has started restoration and repair work after a study of the structure by expert structural engineers from recognised academic institutes.

One of the frequently used footbridges in south Kolkata, Dhakuria FOB came under the scanner after the Majerhat bridge collapsed. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had asked private firms to conduct a detailed study on the structural stability of the city’s FOBs.

4. Mandarmani Marine Drive to Open in 6 Months

In six months, when the Digha-Mandarmani Marine Drive, formally christened Saikat Sarani, is opened, visitors will be able to access four popular coastal spots — Digha, Sankarpur, Tajpur and Mandarmoni — with ease.

Moreover, the distance between Digha and Mandarmani will be shortened by about 12 km.

A brainchild of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Rs 182 crore project was announced in 2014 but could not be completed as “work on three connecting bridges along the marine drive was stalled owing to technical problems.”

5. ‘No Chance’ of Tie-Up Talks with the Congress: Sitaram Yechury

CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury has said there “is no chance” of tie-up talks with the Congress at the national level and advocated state-specific negotiations.

“There is no chance of initiating talks with the Congress at the national level. We had said the political dynamics in different states are different. So, any talks on an understanding with the Congress have to be initiated at the state level,” Yechury said in Kolkata on Sunday, 13 January, on the sidelines of a condolence meeting for former Bengal Industry Minister and politburo member Nirupam Sen.

6. Calcutta High Court to Digitise 80 Crore Pages of Records in 3 Years

Calcutta High Court, the oldest HC in India, is set to go digital with its case records —a massive trove of 80 crore pages — that have been lying in the court libraries and locker rooms since Independence.

The initiative will take at least three years to complete. Once done, the HC — established on 1 July 1862 under the High Courts Act, 1861 — will have a secure digital vault of case records, readily accessible by court-authorised personnel or institutions for reference.

7. 15 Puppies Found Dead Inside Disposable Bags at NRS Hospital

Seventeen puppies – 15 of them dead – and a dog were found tied up in three disposable bags in a parking lot at NRS Medical College and Hospital on Sunday afternoon, 13 January, causing widespread outrage because of the sheer brutality of the incident.

The adult dog, bleeding profusely from a nearly gouged-out eye, tore open the plastic bag meant for medical waste and jumped out in pain, prompting locals to tear up the bags that were dumped near the hospital's Centenary Building. Two of the puppies were still breathing. They were rushed to a veterinary clinic, but one of them died soon.
