In a viral video, a man in Chengannur town in Kerala, made a desperate plea to be rescued from his house that was inundated in water.

Speaking to the camera, he said, “There seems to be no way of being rescued from this place. I have called many people, but MLA, nobody has reached. I have informed them. I pray they reach. This is the situation inside the house. The water will soon reach the upper floor. The water is slowly rising up the staircase. Please pray.”

Kerala has had no respite from the rains that have been causing havoc in the state over the past one week. All districts in the state are flooded, and 79 lives have been lost according to IANS. A red alert has been issued in 12 of 14 districts.

The Supreme Court called the situation “grave” on Thursday, 16 August. Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the Defence Ministry to step up rescue operations and assured all possible help.

The public transport system has collapsed in many parts of central Kerala. Southern Railways and Kochi Metro has also suspended their operations. The Kochi airport will also remain shut till 18 August.
