The latest data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) show an eight-fold rise in environmental crimes between 2016 and 2017. However, 70 percent of the offences recorded are under the Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 — such as smoking in public and use of plastic in packaging for tobacco products — which have only a minor environmental impact, experts said.

“I feel that the data is misleading,” Sanjay Upadhyay, an environmental lawyer and founder of the Enviro Legal Defence Firm (ELDF), India’s first environmental law firm, told IndiaSpend.

“It shows that the number of environmental offences have increased so many folds but without any true impact on the environment.”
