Three soldiers were killed and three others injured on Saturday during a gunbattle between suspected Ulfa militants and police officials in the Pengri area of Tinsukia district of Assam, Mukesh Sahay, DGP said.

The militants had reportedly ambushed an army vehicle after an IED blast after which there was an exchange of fire between the two sides.

One soldier was killed while three others were injured in an IED blast in Assam's Digboi area.

Defence sources said the soldiers were travelling in an Army vehicle when the blast took place.

"Three soldiers were injured and one died while being evacuated to military hospital," the sources said, adding that search is on for the militants involved in the blast.

The encounter is underway and the forces are trying to locate the terrorists.

I pray for the speedy recovery of our injured soldiers. Spoke to Assam Chief Minister who apprised me of the situation in the wake of blast in Tinsukia. Ministry of Home Affairs is closely monitoring the situation.
