A huge, unmanageable crowd reportedly turned up to see the Thugs of Hindostan star, Aamir Khan in a Chinese university in Beijing, leaving the authorities in a state of panic.
The fandom for Aamir Khan is pervasive in China thanks to films like 3 Idiots and Dangal. As the news of the superstar visiting the university broke out, people reportedly started flocking the venue in large numbers. The small auditorium was teeming with around 3000 people compelling authorities to cancel the event since they were unsure if they could manage it. The authorities even amped up the security.
According to the Chinese media, the star was promoting Thugs of Hindostan in Beijing. The school apparently did not know about the promotional event till the last moment.
An IANS report cites that the Chinese university cancelled Aamir Khan's fan meet, citing the organiser's failure to seek permission to use the campus.
“The message was spread only among a small group of students through social media. The school only knew about it when students talked about the event hours before it was about to take place,” the Global Times quoted an employee of the varsity as saying.
According to IANS, the Weibo account that promotes Khan's films announced the school had cancelled the event "unilaterally" as the "the students were overly enthusiastic".
The post angered many students, who said the university did not know about the event at all before the day it was supposed to take place. Many students said they waited outside the event site for over an hour.
The fan meet reportedly was soon relocated to the Four Seasons hotel not far from the campus and ended at around 11 pm the same night.
