The Election Commission of India (EC) is all set to appoint actor Rajkummar Rao as its 'National Icon' ahead of assembly elections in five states and the 2024 general elections.

The poll body announced that a formal ceremony will be held in this regard on Thursday, 26 October.

According to reports, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will formally appoint Rao to the title on Thursday. National icons are appointed to motivate voters to participate in elections.

Earlier this month, the EC announced that over 161 million people across five states will vote in the upcoming assembly elections.

The Chhattisgarh elections will be held in two phases on 7 and 17 November. Madhya Pradesh and Telangana are scheduled to go to polls on 17 and 30 November, respectively. While in Rajasthan, the elections will be held on 25 December.

The votes will be reportedly counted on 3 December.

Earlier, the EC appointed prominent film and sports celebrities like Aamir Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and MC Mary Kom as national icons.
