A video showing a waterlogged runway with people surrounding the front wheel of an aeroplane is being widely shared on social media, where users have claimed that it shows visuals from Terminal 2 of Mumbai Airport.

  • The claim comes against the backdrop of the city seeing torrential downpour, with the Meteorological Department issuing a 'red alert' for Mumbai from 18-20 August.

(Archived versions of more posts sharing this claim can be seen here, here, here, and here.)

Is it true?: No, the claim is false as the video is old.

  • It shows the condition of Chennai Airport in December 2023, when Cyclone Michaung impacted parts of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

How did we find this out?: A simple reverse image search on the video using Google Lens led us to news reports from December 2023.

  • This report by The New Indian Express, dated 5 December 2023, carried a screenshot of the viral video, with the caption that it showed visuals from Chennai Airport due to "incessant rains" triggered by Cyclone Michaung.

  • It noted that the cyclone had inundated Chennai Airport's runway, causing operations to be shut down for a full day.

  • Other reports by The Telegraph, South First, and Moneycontrol about Cyclone Michaung's impact on Chennai Airport also included screengrabs from this video.

  • The clip was also uploaded by The Times of India on their YouTube channel.

Was Mumbai Airport flooded?: Amid heavy rainfall, Mumbai Airport's T2, which is called the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, saw several delays and diversions, as per The Economic Times.

  • While rains and low visibility hindered operations, there were no credible reports about runways being flooded or operations stopping.

  • In light of the red alert, the airport's official X account issued a passenger advisory, telling people to "check their flight status" and "allow extra travel time to reach the airport."

Airlines such as IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India, and Akasa Air also issued similar notices for flyers.

Conclusion: An old video from Chennai is being shared to falsely claim that it shows recent visuals from Mumbai Airport.
