In an extremely startling case, a 28-year-old former tech employee, who was arrested by the Chennai police for robbing, was found to be a serial rapist, who had raped upto 50 women in Chennai.

The police, reports Times of India, discovered this fact when they took his cellphone after arresting him and found incriminating videos of him sexually assaulting these women at knife-point, after trapping them alone at home.

Madhan Arivalagan, a native of Mathur in Krishnagiri district is a BSc (Maths) graduate from a Krishnagiri college, who worked for a software firm in Bengaluru for a couple of years before moving to Chennai in 2015.

According to the police, Arivalagan could not find any suitable employment opportunities in the city and began to rob households and on the roads, especially targeting women who were home alone. During one of his robberies, he had raped the woman he had robbed from and began his stint as a sexual predator.

Arivalagan sexually assaulted women after trapping them alone at home. He recorded the acts on his cellphone in several cases and used the footage to blackmail and repeatedly rape the women.

Arivalagan would knock on doors asking the women who opened it for directions to a place or whether he could glass of water, to gauge whether a woman was alone. He would then trap them at knife-point and sexually assault them, and tape the entire thing on his phone. He would then demand the numbers of the women he was assaulting and then threaten them with the videos, telling them he would show it to their families.

In this way, he would blackmail his way into raping them again.

Arivalagan forced his victims to give him their mobile phone numbers and contacts. He later called them and threatened to show the videos to their husbands or family members and raped them again on several occasions.

The police had picked up Arivalagan after they received a complaint from a software engineer and Velachery resident, Williams, who told them that a lone robber had mugged him at knife point near his house a few days earlier. The robber had apparently managed to get Rs 8,500 from Williams and escape.

He was identified, tracked down and arrested after the police unearthed footage from the security cameras in the area.
