A 21-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping an 18-month-old girl in south Delhi’s Shahpur Jat area near Hauz Khaz. According to a report by The Indian Express, the victim’s mother found her bleeding and rushed her to Safdarjung Hospital, where it was confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.
The accused, identified as Santosh Rai, was the victim’s father’s colleague in a private security company. He used to stay with the family.
Rai, who was arrested on Monday evening, was babysitting the child as both her parents had morning shifts.
Police told The Indian Express that investigations are on and a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at Hauz Khaz police station.
Protests Demanding Death Penalty For Child Rapists
Following the incident, Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chairperson Swati Maliwal, on Tuesday, protested outside the residence of Home Minister Rajnath Singh demanding the death penalty within six months to those who rape children.
Maliwal urged Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Lt Governor Anil Baijal, and Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik to chair a meeting on the issue. She also urged all the leaders to visit the rape victim in the hospital.
Maliwal tweeted that the girl was “raped so brutally that the walls, floors and bed of her house had blood all over”.
