Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • We were able to trace the video to May 2021 from Mumbai.

  • It is not recent to the present rains in the city, as claimed.

What we found: At first, we divided the viral video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • This directed us to a YouTube video by a channel named The Global Exhibition, published on 23 July 2021.

  • It was the same clip, ascertaining that it does not represent the present conditions in Mumbai.

  • We also found another upload on YouTube of the same video from 18 May 2021.

  • We ran a relevant keyword search and came across a report by the Times of India that Cyclonic storm Tauktae skirted the Mumbai coast on 17 May 2021, battered the sea-facing safety wall and iron gates near the Gateway of India.

  • The storm dislodged jetty stones and caused part of the adjacent footpath to cave in.

  • Additionally, other media outlets such as CNN-News 18 and the Hindustan Times uploaded videos on their official YouTube channels about massive flooding around the Gateway of India due to massive storm in May 2021.

Present situation in Mumbai: The city saw clearer skies after massive rainfall battered the city and nearby areas in the last two days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, with rainfall expected to ease over the next three days in Konkan and Madhya Maharashtra regions, reported the Indian Express.

Conclusion: Team WebQoof was able to trace the viral video to May 2021 when Mumbai witnessed Cyclonic storm Tauktae. It does not show the present situation in the city.
