Nirbhaya Gangrape Case: Verdict on Pleas of Convicts Likely

The Supreme Court’s verdict on the review pleas of three out of the four convicts who were sent to death row in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case is likely to be delivered on Monday, 9 July.

The verdict will be pronounced by a bench comprising three judges – Justice Ashok Bhushan and R Bhanumathi, headed by CJI Dipak Misra.

One Terrorist Dead in Encounter With Security Forces in J&K

One terrorist has been killed in an encounter with security forces in Handwara, in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Monday, 9 July. The encounter started last night, reported ANI. The security forces launched a cordon and search operation there, which is still underway.

#MumbaiRains: Heavy Showers To Continue For 48 Hours

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted scattered showers all over Mumbai till Wednesday, 11 July. The intensity of rain is expected to increase on Monday with incessant heavy rain in isolated areas and extremely heavy rain in the city and suburbs.

Water-logging is imminent and railway lines may be affected during rush hour. In Nala Sopara, trains are being run at restricted speed. There is no water logging anywhere else on the Western Railway routes, the Western Railway PRO said. Other suburban services are functioning normally, reported ANI.

Gangster Munna Bajrangi Shot Dead In UP Jail

Dreaded criminal and gangster Munna Bajrangi has reportedly been shot dead by fellow inmate Sunil Rathi inside Baghpat district jail in UP on Monday, 9 July.

“There was an altercation between them after which Sunil Rathi shot him dead. He has been detained and is being interrogated. The jailor, deputy jailor, warden and head warden have been suspended. Have requested judicial and magisterial inquiry,” ADG of the prison told ANI.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath has called this incident a “serious matter”. “Will conduct an in-depth investigation and strict action to be taken against those responsible,” he told ANI.

Brexit Secretary and Department Minister Step Down

Brexit Secretary David Davis and Steve Baker, a minister in the British government's Brexit department, resigned from their respective posts on Monday, 9 July, Reuters reported. The resignation was over Prime Minister Theresa May's policies that were undermining exit negotiations with Brussels.

"The general direction of policy will leave us in at best a weak negotiating position, and possibly an inescapable one," Davis said in his resignation letter.

New Presidential Term For Erdogan

Turkey's Tayyip Erdogan will be sworn in as president on Monday, 9 July, and he will assume sweeping new powers over a country he has dominated for 15 years, Reuters reported. Erdogan won a referendum last year that replaced the country's system of parliamentary democracy with an all-powerful presidency. Under the changes, there will be no post of prime minister. Erdogan will select his own cabinet and regulate ministries without approval from the parliament.

While Erdogan promises economic growth and security, opponents say the new powers tilt towards authoritarianism and erosion of the secular institutions.

SC Refuses To Delay Hearing in Section 377 Case

The Supreme Court on Monday, 9 July, refused to defer the hearing in the Section 377 case. The Centre had sought adjournment to file its written reply. CJI refused to adjourn the hearing that is scheduled to begin from Tuesday, 10 July, by a Constitution bench, ANI reports.

Death Toll Rises to 24 As Train Derails in Turkey

Twenty four people have been killed and hundreds injured after a train derailed in Northwest Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister Recep Akdag said on Monday, 9 July.

Around 338 people required emergency medical attention after the accident and 124 were hospitalised, Health Minister Ahmet Demircan said to Turkish media.

The train had derailed on account of heavy rains that caused the ground beneath the track to erode, reported AFP.

The Supreme Court on Monday, 9 July, refused to allow offering of Namaz at Taj Mahal. The court said that “the historic Taj Mahal is one of the seven wonders of the world, so it should be kept in mind that no Namaz will be offered there. There are other places where one can do that,” ANI reported.

SC Upholds Death Penalty For Nirbhaya Case Convicts, Dismisses Plea

The Supreme Court on Monday, 9 July upheld its earlier order of death sentence to three of the four convicts in the Nirbhaya murder case, thereby rejecting their plea seeking reduction of the death sentence to life term.

Dominic Raab Appointed Secretary of State for Brexit Process

British Prime Minister Theresa May appointed Dominic Raab as the new Brexit Secretary after his predecessor quit in protest at the government's plans for a close trading relationship with the European Union.

"The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Dominic Raab MP as Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union," a statement from May's office said, Reuters reported.

Fifth Boy From Thailand Soccer Team Rescued From Cave

One more boy from the Thailand soccer team was rescued, the Royal Thai navy confirmed to Reuters.

“A fifth boy has been rescued from Tham Luang cave,” A Royal Thai Navy official said to Reuters.

Sensex Ends At 5-Month High Led By Reliance, Infosys

India's Sensex rose to its highest level in five months as investors shifted focus to June quarter earnings which begin today with Dish TV and Uttam Galva Steels.

The S&P BSE Sensex rose 0.78 percent or 277 points to 35,935, its highest level since Jan. 31, 2018, and the NSE Nifty 50 index climbed 0.74 percent or 80 points to 10,853.

Reliance Industries, Infosys, Larsen & Toubro and Yes Bank led the rally for Sensex in today's session.

All sector gauges compiled by BSE ended higher led by the S&P BSE Energy and S&P BSE Capital Goods indexes’ 1.5 percent gain.

The mid- and small-cap shares outperformed their larger peers as the S&P BSE MidCap and S&P BSE SmallCap indexes rose over a percent each.

SC Directs Punjab Govt to Provide Security to Trial Judge in Kathua Rape and Murder Case

The Supreme Court directed the Punjab government to provide security to the trial judge in the Kathua rape and murder case. The court also directed that the security for the special public prosecutor is to be provided by the Jammu and Kashmir government.

SC order also added that the trial should be held in-camera. The court ordered the accused be shifted from Kathua Jail to Gurdaspur Central Jail.

The SC also rejected the J&K govt’s plea to hold the trial via video conference. Petitions against the orders of the trial court will be heard by the Punjab High Court, the SC ordered.

Sixth And Seventh Team Members from Thai Soccer Team Rescued From Cave

Seven people from the Thailand soccer team the “Wild Boars” have been rescued from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province, Reuters confirmed.

Five boys, members of the "Wild Boars", and the team’s coach are still inside the Tham Luang cave. Four boys were rescued on Sunday, and three more on Monday.

The boys along with their coach have been trapped in Tham Luang cave since 23 June.

With one more person being carried out on a stretcher, eight people from the Thailand soccer team the “Wild Boars” have been rescued from the flooded Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai province, Reuters confirmed.

British foreign minister Boris Johnson resigned on Monday, following former-Brexit minister David Davis out of the cabinet just days after Prime Minister Theresa May secured a hard-won agreement from senior ministers on an EU exit strategy, Reuters reported.

"This afternoon, the Prime Minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary. His replacement will be announced shortly. The Prime Minister thanks Boris for his work,” an emailed statement from May's office said.

Delhi HC Gives JNU 2 Weeks to Complete Probe into Sexual Harassment Allegations Against Professor Atul Johri

Delhi High Court granted two weeks time to Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), to complete its investigation into alleged misconduct by one of its professors, Atul Johri, who has been accused of sexually harassing women students, ANI reported.
