Andheri Bridge Collapse: What transpired?

Nearly 9 months after the Elphinston mishap that killed at least 22, a part of the Gokhale bridge in Mumbai’s Andheri collapsed at around 7.30 am on 3 July, injuring 5, damaging wires and partially disrupting local train services in the Western Line.

The bridge connects Andheri East to Andheri West.

The injured have been admitted to the Dr RN Cooper Municipal General Hospital located in Juhu.

Restoration work is underway despite heavy rainfall in the city. Western Railways clarified that restoration of over head electrical wires and tracks near Andheri have been undertaken extensively.

While some trains were cancelled or terminated due to traffic disruption, 27 special buses were arranged between Borivali and Bandra stations for clearance of stranded passengers.

Union Railway Minister while addressing the media from the collapse site, called the bridge collapse an unfortunate incident and said that Commissioner of Rail Safety will submit a report on the mishap in 15 days.

Goyal also announced an ad hoc compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the victims stating that their treatment expenses will be taken care of by Railways.
