Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to West Bengal, a video showing a physical confrontation between people holding flags of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and police personnel is circulating on social media.
Those sharing the video claimed that there has been recent violence in the state, indicating that BJP workers assaulted police personnel.
What did users say?: They wrote, "Police security force is not safe from these goons in West Bengal and they say that Hindus are in danger." (sic.)
(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)
Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false as the incident is not recent.
The incident took place in September 2022 when Kolkata's Assistant Commissioner Debjit Chatterjee was assaulted during the BJP's 'Nabanno Chalo Abhiyan' (march to the secretariat) opposing the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
What we found: At first, we divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
It led us to a post on X from 13 September 2022 by NDTV journalist Sreyashi Dey.
It featured the same clip as the viral video and noted, "An assistant commissioner of #KolkataPolice grievously injured in today’s protest rally in the city."
We went through the comments and found a post by news agency ANI from the same date, 13 September 2022.
It featured a video showing police personnel thrashing people in a similar area as the viral video.
It noted, "West Bengal: Police personnel in Kolkata thrash a BJP worker who had joined other members of the party in their call for a "Nabanna Chalo" march." (sic.)
We, then, ran a relevant keyword search and found reports by the Hindustan Times and NDTV from September 2022.
The reports stated that protestors assaulted the assistant commissioner of Kolkata Police during the BJP's 'Nabanna Chalo' initiative to oppose the state government.
We also found a photo story by The Quint from September 2022 which featured an image similar to a frame of the viral video.
BJP's 'Nabanno Chalo' Protests: The West Bengal BJP had initiated a 'Nabanno Chalo' demonstration against the state government following corruption allegations against various TMC leaders.
The viral video shows Kolkata's Assistant Commissioner Debjit Chatterjee being assaulted, reported The Quint in September 2022.
Team WebQoof checked the same viral video when it was being shared with a different claim in 2023. You can read the story here.
Conclusion: An old video from 2022 showing some BJP workers assaulting police personnel has gone viral on social media as a recent incident.
