A video featuring Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar has gone viral on social media.
In the footage, a man comes up to Kumar with a flower garland, and as he lowers his head, the man unexpectedly strikes him while putting on the garland.
Those sharing have claimed that the incident was recent.
What we found: At first, we divided the clip into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.
We came across several posts on social media platforms and news reports from 2024 featuring the same clip.
A report by India Today from 17 May 2024 noted that Kumar slapped by man garlanding him, black ink thrown in Kartar Nagar, Delhi.
The report mentioned Deputy Commissioner of Police for North East Delhi's comment which stated that a few individuals arrived and placed a garland around Kumar. Following the garlanding, a few individuals threw ink at the politician and attempted to attack him.
Similarly, we came across a report by Aaj Tak which stated that two individuals claimed responsibility for the attack on Kumar via a video on social media, however, the news outlet did not independently verify it.
In the video, these individuals asserted that 'anyone who discusses splitting the country and demeans the Indian army would face this treatment.
The two stated that they are not affiliated with any party and did not act at the request of any organisation.
Additionally, news outlet Mirror Now also reported on this incident from May 2024.
Kumar stood against Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate Manoj Tiwari from the North-East Delhi seat. Tiwari won the election.
Conclusion: An old video from 2024 has been falsely shared as recent to claim that the Congress leader was attacked, recently.
