A troubling video showing two men pulling dog corpses from black plastic bags is being shared on social media.

The claim: Those sharing have claimed that it shows the large-scale extermination of stray dogs in Delhi after the Supreme Court's order to transfer them to shelters within eight weeks throughout the Delhi-NCR area.

(Archives of similar claims can be found here and here.)

Is the claim true?: No, the claim is false.

  • The video shows an incident that took place in Ca Mau Province in southern Vietnam, where the bodies of 12 dogs were found with two men detained on charges of dog theft.

  • It has no connection with the recent SC order for the removal of stray dogs in Delhi NCR.

What we found: We divided the video into multiple screenshots and ran a Google reverse image search on some of them.

  • We were led to a post on Facebook featuring the same video on 5 August.

  • It's caption noted, "Group of thieves. Professional in Gia Rai ward, Ca Mau." (sic.) (translated from Vietnamese to English)

  • We, then, ran a relevant keyword search using the words in the Facebook caption and were led to a news report by an English newspaper named Tuoi Tre News from 5 August.

  • The headline read, "2 arrested in southern Vietnam for organised dog theft, 12 dogs found dead." (sic.)

  • The report stated that the individuals suspected were recognised as Lam Hai Trung (37) and Quach Dung Binhthat (45) of the Ca Mau province. They, later, confessed to the crime.

  • The newspaper reported that the authorities apprehended the two on the suspicion of stealing dogs throughout Gia Rai Ward when they discovered the two disposing the corpses of 12 dogs.

  • Apart from the corpses, the police found various equipment typically used in pet theft.

  • Other media outlets such a Voice of Vietnam and Báo Tuổi Trẻ also reported on this incident from 3 August.

  • It was clear that the brutal video was from Vietnam's Ca Mau province.

Conclusion: It is clear that the viral video showing bodies of deceased dogs is one from Vietnam and not Delhi, India.
