After getting the entire nation’s support, Aamir Khan on Tuesday released a statement via Twitter backing Dangal actress Zaira Wasim after she posted an open letter online.

Wasim, the young Kashmiri girl who played the younger Geeta Phogat, had put up a social media post on Monday afternoon, apologising for hurting people and requesting that she not be seen as a role model by the Kashmiri youth.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Aamir Khan, who played Zaira’s father in the film, supported the girl and appealed to everyone to leave the 16-year-old girl alone.

The elder two Phogat sisters - Geeta and Babita - had earlier on Monday also said that Zaira Wasim had nothing to be scared of.

It is believed that Zaira’s meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti kicked off a spate of hate messages on Facebook aimed at her. The trolls included Muslim radicals who attacked Zaira for having done the un-Islamic deed” of acting in a film.
