Five Dead in Fire at Residential Building in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
Five people were killed when a fire broke out in a residential building at Ner Chowk in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh late last night, ANI reported. Many more are feared trapped inside. Three fire tenders are at the spot and rescue operations are underway.

Multiple People Shot at in Toronto
At least 10 people, including a child, were shot in Toronto on Sunday and the gunman was dead, Canadian news agencies reported.
Reports of gunfire in the city's Greektown neighborhood began at 10 pm local time (0200 GMT Monday), CityNews.com reported.
Witnesses said they heard 25 gunshots, the news website reported.

Britain's strong Sikh community is all set to be listed in the 2021 census as a distinct ethnicity rather than only as a religion, the UK Statistics Authority has said, a major step that will give the community a fair access to all public services in the country.
Last year, over 100 British MPs, including Indian-origin lawmakers, had asked the authority to include Sikh as a separate ethnic box for the 2021 census.

Ambedkar's Statue Desecrated in MP
A statue of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar was allegedly desecrated by unidentified persons in Madhya Pradesh's Shajapur district, a police official said on Monday, 23 July.
The statue, installed on outskirts of Kalisindh village, located about 28 kms from the district headquarters, was desecrated by some persons last night, Bercha police station in-charge Rakesh Nain said.
Some locals informed the police after they found an arm and spectacles of the statue broken.
Shajapur district's Superintendent of Police Anurag Sharma and other officials reached the spot to look into the matter.

SHO Seen Getting Godwoman's Blessings, Transferred
An SHO was sent to district lines after a photograph of him in uniform seeking blessings from a self-styled godwoman went viral,
The photograph shows Indrapal Singh, SHO of Janakpuri police station, sitting on a chair and godwoman Namita Acharya placing her hand on his head, they said.
While a few reports claimed the police official was getting his head massaged from the godwoman, the police said Singh was seeking blessings from her.
Vijay Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (west), said Singh has been sent to the district lines, adding that it was not proper for him to go there in uniform.
A vigilance enquiry under additional deputy commissioner of police (West) has been ordered into the incident, an official said.

Choksi Seeks Cancellation of NBWs, Cites Fear of Mob lynching
Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi, a key accused in the multi-crore PNB scam, on Monday, 23 July, moved a special court here seeking cancellation of non-bailable warrants issued against him, claiming that he apprehends mob lynching if he is brought to India.
Choksi, in his application moved before the special PMLA court, claimed he faces a threat to his life not only from his former employees and debtors but also from jail staff and inmates (where he would be launched if he returns).
"As it became impossible for the applicant's company to function and the employees were not paid their salaries and debtors did not get their money back, all these persons have become agitated against the applicant and he is now facing threat to his life," the application said.

A welfare committee formed to prevent misuse of animals in films and events has committed "serious irregularities", Union minister Maneka Gandhi has said in a letter to Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan, and urged him to look into the matter.
A nine-member Performing Animal Sub-Committee (PASC) was formed by Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) to evaluate applications for use of animal performances. A filmmaker planning to use animal performances need clearance from them.
"I have been informed that serious irregularities are routinely taking place at the meetings of PASC which amount to violations of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 and more," Gandhi wrote in the letter.

Centre's Move to Regulate Foreign Scribes' Visit to Valley 'Oppressive': Hurriyat
Moderate Hurriyat Conference headed by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq today said the Centre's decision, asking foreign journalists to seek prior permission for visiting Kashmir, as an "oppressive" step aimed at hiding the ground realities of the Valley.
"The Government of India's decision of barring the entry of foreign journalists to Kashmir is another oppressive step aimed at hiding the exact ground realities and the ultimate oppression unleashed by lakhs of Indian forces, before the world community," a spokesperson for the Hurriyat said in a statement.
AIADMK Functionary Hacked to Death in TN
A 42-year old AIADMK local level functionary was hacked to death by a gang of around ten people on a road in broad daylight at Sirkazhi in the district today, police said.
Rames Babu, a contractor and AIADMK's Kollidam block students wing deputy secretary, died on the spot after being attacked with sickles by the unidentified gang members, who later fled the scene, they said.
He was involved in executing public works department contracts and a staunch loyalist of Tamil Nadu Handlooms Minister O S Manian, who hails from the district, party sources said.
A Lawmaker Stands Disqualified if Conviction Not Stayed: SC
The Supreme Court on Monday, 23 July, said that a lawmaker, whose conviction in a criminal case has not been stayed by an appellate court, would stand disqualified from the membership of the House.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also reserved its verdict on a plea filed by NGO 'Lok Prahari' which alleged that the 2013 verdict of the apex court in the Lilly Thomas case was being flouted by the Members of Parliament, MLAs and MLCs, who continue to hold their memberships even after their convictions in criminal cases.
The apex court, on July 10, 2013, had struck down section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act (RPA) that gave a convicted lawmaker the power to remain in office on the ground that appeals have been filed within three months of conviction.
Two Held in Mumbai for killing of RTI Activist in Telangana
Two men wanted in connection with the killing of an RTI activist in Telangana in May were arrested in Mumbai.
The Crime Branch of Mumbai Police arrested Rajeshwar Goud Elimati (46) and Rajayya Kasarppu (51) from their homes in suburban Bandra and Jogeshwari, respectively, yesterday an official said.
He said the duo, who owned toddy shops in Mumbai, were wanted for the killing of Right to Information (RTI) activist Podeti Satyanarayan Narsa Goud.
The 51-year-old was shot dead by unidentified persons in Dharmapuri town in Jagtial district of Telangana on 9 May.
Naxal Gunned Down in Chhattisgarh, Two Firearms Recovered
A Naxal was gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Kondagaon district of Chhattisgarh, police said.
The gun battle took place in the forest of Chhote Usri village under Bayanar police station limits when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Kondagaon Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallav told PTI over the phone.
When the patrolling team was advancing through Chhote Usri, located around 250 km from the state capital Raipur, an exchange of fire broke out between the two sides, he said
Centre Supports in SC Plea Against Female Genital Mutilation
The Centre told the Supreme Court that it supported the petition opposing the practice of female genital mutilation in the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra agreed to hear on July 30 the plea filed by Delhi-based lawyer Sunita Tiwari and asked the parties to file their written submissions.
The bench also comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud asked the parties to advance arguments on the plea and on the aspect as to whether it can also be referred to a Constitution bench.
"I am supporting the petitioner. They can begin their arguments on Monday," Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, told the court.
Suspected Militant Arrested in Kashmir
Security forces have arrested a suspected militant from Handwara area of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Monday, 23 July.
A joint team of army, police and CRPF conducted search operations in the orchards of Humpora in Handwara area last evening following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
PM Modi Arrives in Rwanda
PM Narendra Modi arrived in Rwanda on Monday, 23 July. He has been received by President of Rwanda Paul Kagame, who is scheduled to hold a meeting with him later in the day.
The PM is on a five-day visit to Rwanda, Uganda and South Africa.
'Our Relationship Has Stood the Test of Time': PM Modi in Rwanda
After his arrival in Rwanda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the country's President Paul Kagame and the two issued a joint statement asserting cooperation and goodwill between the two countries.
Praising President Kagame's "special gesture" of coming to receive him at the airport, Modi said it is "a sign of respect for the entire India".
The two leaders held delegation-level talks and witnessed the signing of several agreements between the two countries.
