1. J&K BJP Secretary, Brother Shot Dead, Curfew in Kishtwar
Kishtwar town in Jammu and Kashmir was on the edge Thursday, 1 November, night after BJP state secretary Anil Parihar and his elder brother Ajit Parihar were shot dead by unidentified gunmen, prompting authorities to impose curfew.
The attack, suspected to have been carried out by militants, comes days ahead of the panchayat polls in the state which will be held in nine phases starting 17 November.

2. Suspected ULFA(I) Militants Gun Down Five in Assam
Five persons were shot dead by suspected ULFA(I) militants in Assam’s Tinsukia district late on Thursday, 1 November.
Police said six suspected ULFA (I) cadre abducted the five from Dhola’s Kherbari village. Their bodies were later found under a bridge some distance away. A police officer said they had been shot.

TDP leader and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who has been reaching out to Opposition parties in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, met Congress president Rahul Gandhi Thursday, 1 November, as part of an exercise to stitch an alliance against the ruling BJP, saying there’s “democratic compulsion” and “we have to join together to protect the country”.
Fundamentally opposed to the Congress, and a lead player in the formation of the 1996 United Front government, Naidu called the Congress “the principal Opposition party” and said “we want to organise all those parties opposing the BJP… I have proposed all political parties have one meeting on a common platform”.

6. SC Nod to Five More Records for Filing NRC Objections in Assam
Those left out of the draft National Register for Citizens (NRC) for Assam now have more time to stake their claim to citizenship and can also use five additional documents besides the 10 allowed earlier, the Supreme Court said on Thursday, 1 November.
A bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and justice RF Nariman, however, clarified that reliance on these documents would be subject to “rigorous verification” for making fresh claims for inclusion in the register.

7. Woman Believed to Be ‘Honour Killing’ Victim Was Killed over Money
Two years after a 23-year-old Delhi school teacher was murdered and her parents and brother went missing – prompting Uttar Pradesh police to book and charge-sheet them for honour killing – Delhi Police on Thursday, 1 November, said that they have arrested a man for allegedly murdering all the four over a monetary dispute.
AK Singla, additional commissioner of police (crime branch), said UP police had jumped the gun in suspecting the woman’s parents and brother. “The trio’s disappearance had led UP police to accuse them of honour killing,” the officer said.

9. CBI Opposes Asthana Plea on Quashing FIR
In a two-pronged approach, the CBI on Thursday, 1 November, opposed special director Rakesh Asthana's plea to quash the FIR against him but also opposed the plea of additional SP S S Gurm to have a say in the matter.
The agency told Justice Najmi Waziri that there was incriminating material against the accused in the case, the investigation of which was at a nascent stage. It also maintained that no prior sanction was needed to investigate the alleged offences.
