West Bengal Panchayat Elections: SC Allows Aggrieved to File Petition Within 30 Days

The Supreme Court said that there will be no re-election in the local body seats that Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress won uncontested in May. The apex court further said whoever is aggrieved with the election results can file their petitions before the concerned court within 30 days, reported ANI.

The Supreme Court has also set aside the Calcutta order which allowed the filing of e-nominations.

Man claiming to be the brother-in-law of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, created ruckus near Vidhan Sabha in Bhopal when the police stopped him for violating traffic rules, reported ANI.

National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) has directed the Tata Sons not to force Cyrus Mistry to sell his shares in the company, reported ANI.

The NCLAT's decision on conversion of Tata Sons into a Private Limited Company will be taken after the final hearing. The next date of hearing is on 24 September.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman Visits Flood-Hit Kodagu

A senior police official told IANS that the arrests were made based on a complaint received from another senior government official.

14-Year-Old Girl Found Raped, Killed in Her House in Maharashtra

A 14-year-old girl was found raped and killed by unidentified persons in her house at Bhiwandi near here in Maharashtra, police said on Friday, 24 August.

The girl was alone at her home in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi at the time of the incident on Thursday afternoon, Thane Police PRO Sukhada Narkar said. No one has been arrested in the case as of yet.

HC Rejects Convicts' Appeal in 2010 Dalit Killing Case

The Delhi High Court on Friday, 24 August dismissed a convicts' appeal challenging a trial court order which held 15 people guilty in a 2010 Dalit killing case in Haryana's Hisar district. The high court also convicted people of the Jaat community who were earlier acquitted by the trial court, reported ANI.

The court said, "The Jaat community deliberately attacked the people of the Valmiki community". It further added that even after 71 years of Independence, instances of atrocities against the Scheduled Castes by those belonging to the dominant castes have shown no sign of abating.

SC Orders to Maintain Water Level at 139.99 Ft in Mullaperiyar Dam

The Supreme Court has ordered to maintain the water level at 139.99 feet in Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala till 31 August, reported ANI.

“Now he will undergo treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi. He will be brought from Mumbai's Asian Heart Institute where he is currently admitted,” said Prabhat Kumar, Lalu Prasad Yadav’s lawyer.

Witness in Unnao Rape Case Died Due to Liver Disease: Unnao SP Harish Kumar

Commenting on the death of the witness in the Unnao rape case, Unnao SP Harish Kumar told ANI, “The wife of the witness said in an application that he was suffering from a liver disease since 2012 and the doctors said a month ago that there are no chances of his survival.”

He further added that it is mentioned in the application that the witness's wife was told by Mahesh Singh (Unnao rape victim’s uncle) that she would be given Rs 8 lakh for signing a paper. We are investigating into the matter.”

Man Loses Eyesight After Consuming Spurious Liquor in UP

A man was admitted to hospital as he complained of losing his eyesight after consuming spurious liquor in Kamalpur village under the Jhinjhana police station here, officials said on Friday, 24 August.

According to Deepak Kumar, the medical officer at the Shamli District Hospital, Mohar Singh, who lost his eyesight after consuming spurious liquor, was subsequently referred to the Meerut Medical College for treatment.

SC Reserves Verdict on Pleas for Live Streaming of Court Proceedings

The Supreme Court reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas related to the issue of live streaming of court proceedings, reported PTI.

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said it would pass appropriate orders after Attorney General K K Venugopal suggested that live streaming of the important cases in the Chief Justice's court can be started on a pilot basis.

Earthquake of 7.1 Magnitude Hits Peru-Brazil Border

A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck along Peru's border with Brazil, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. It added that the quake hit at a depth of 609 kilometers (380 miles), on Peru's eastern frontier with Brazil.

The earthquake hit shortly after 2:30 pm, about 140 kilometers west of the Peruvian town of Iberia.

"So far no damage or victims have been reported and monitoring continues," said Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense (INDECI).
