6.5-Magnitude Quake Shakes Guatemala, Mexico

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken Mexico and Guatemala, leaving three people injured and causing infrastructure damage, authorities said.

The quake struck on Friday near the Mexico-Guatemala border, 37 kilometers (23 miles) southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, said Mexico's National Seismological Service. It put the depth at 62 kilometers.

French Priest Jailed for Sexual Abuse

A French priest was Friday sentenced to five years, two without parole, for sexually assaulting four young female parishioners, one of whom was just nine when the offences started, and embezzling 100,000 euros (USD 115,000) to pay one of his victims.

The trial was held behind closed doors at Colmar Criminal Court, in northeast France, which publicly announced the sentence late Friday.

Chinese 'Underground' Bishop Gains Official Recognition: State Media

A bishop from China's "underground" Catholic church is slated to step up as the official state-backed clergyman for a diocese in central China, state-run media reported, amid a thaw in relations between Beijing and the Holy See.

An agreement struck in September on the appointment of bishops has paved the way for a rapprochement between Beijing and the Vatican after diplomatic ties were cut off in 1951. It also gives both sides a say in appointing Catholic bishops in China.

Woman Ultra Killed in Encounter in Chhattisgarh

A suspected woman naxal was killed and another injured Saturday in an encounter between security forces and ultras in Chhattisgarh, police said.

NFL Q3 Profit Almost Doubles to Rs 104 Cr

State-owned fertiliser firm NFL Saturday reported a nearly two-fold jump in net profit at Rs 103.92 crore for the December quarter on higher sales, especially of non-urea products.
