Israel Opposes UN Council Visit to Palestinian Areas

Israel has told the UN Security Council that it opposes a planned visit by the top UN body to the Palestinian territories for a close-up look at the situation, Kuwait's ambassador said.

Kuwait and other council members proposed the visit to the occupied territories during a meeting last week on Israel's decision to end the international observer force in the West Bank city of Hebron.

During a closed-door meeting on Wednesday, the council president briefed members on talks held with Israel and the Palestinians on the proposal for a visit.

NGT Fines Rustomjee Developers Rs 1 Cr for Environment Norms Violation

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed an interim fine of Rs 1 crore on a private developer for violation of environment norms in construction of a residential project in Bandra area.

In an order passed on 11 February, the principal bench of NGT at New Delhi held that Rustomjee Developers violated four major environment norms at its residential project Rustomjee Oriana, located at MIG Colony in Bandra-East.

It imposed Rs 1 crore fine on the developer as an "interim cost for damaging environment".

The Madras High Court has framed guidelines to be followed by executive magistrates while ordering detention or arrest of an accused for breach of bail bond.

As per guidelines framed by Justice V Parthiban Wednesday, executive magistrates should issue notice to the person who jumped the bond condition to explain as to why action under Section 122(1)(b) (arrest or detention) of CrPC should not be taken for breach of the bond on a date fixed.

Two persons died from electrocution when they were going to immerse a Saraswati idol in the Ganges in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, police said Thursday.

Chhotu Kumar Singh (20) and Mayank (18) died after they came into contact with live electricity wire Wednesday evening when they were travelling in a tractor trolley, the police said.

Six persons were injured in the incident and had to be hospitalised, they said.

Gunman Kills Five in Northwest Pakistan

A gunman on Thursday barged into a house in northwest Pakistan and shot dead five members of a family.

The incident occurred in Nowshera district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

District Police Office Mansoor Aman said the residents belonged to Peshawar's Badaber area.

The motive behind the murders was yet to be known.

In a separate incident, five people were killed and four injured as lightening struck their house in Sur Gul Village Kohat district. The dead included husband and wife and three children.

A special CBI court in Dehradun has sentenced a serving Income Tax Commissioner to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment in a 14-year-old disproportionate assets case.

CBI Special Judge Sujata Singh on Wednesday also awarded one year jail term to the officer Shwetabh Suman's 90-year-old mother Gulab Devi besides sentencing his brother-in-law Arun Kumar Singh and his close aide Rajendra Vikram Singh to four years in prison after convicting them under IPC.
