On Wednesday, a video of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma speaking ecstatically about the company’s success at their New Year’s party went viral.

People criticised him on social media for his choice of words, expletives, the supposed putting down of competition and his celebration of demonetisation, a policy that has lead to widespread hardship for a large section of India’s population.

Shekhar made a statement about the video, saying his words have been “discussed widely and a bit out of context too.”

He said that he was energised by the infectious spirit of his team and in no way did he make any statements out of hubris.

I come to work everyday for their remarkable energy and commitment and wanted to communicate to each of them that they are appreciated and their efforts are making a difference.

Sharma called the speech a celebration of the combined efforts of his entire team which led to the company’s success and their hard work which helped them deliver to their merchants and customers.

In retrospect, I could have chosen some words better. I have never taken anything for granted and won’t ever either.

He concluded by saying that his company only wishes to grow and serve people in the coming days.
