Being a woman in India means being constantly told what you should wear and how you should behave. After the ‘guardians of women’s modesty’ trolled Priyanka Chopra for wearing a dress in front of PM Modi and Fatima Sana Shaikh for wearing a swimsuit during the month of Ramzan, a Muslim cleric told a female anchor to wear underwear and come to work if she wants to be equal to men.
Yes, with bizarre logic, Yasoob Abbas said, “Underwear pehen ke aaye, tab mard aur aurat barabar ho jayenge.” (Come to work wearing underwear, if you want to be equal to men).
His comment came after Faye D'Souza, the anchor, said that women have the freedom to wear whatever they want to and they do not need to ask anyone if they can or cannot wear something.
Retaining her composure, Faye did not get angry at Yasoob Abbas as she would’ve been entitled to do, but very calmly made the point that she is not threatened or rattled by by him. She also said that she has seen many like him.
Not stopping there, she further shut him up by saying that she stands by Priyanka Chopra and Fatima Sana because she believed that they had the right to wear whatever they wanted to.
If you think you can rattle women while they are doing their job and they will run back into their kitchens, cover themselves up and leave the world for you to conquer, then I have news for you – we are not going anywhere.Faye
