Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Kapil Sibal has come to the rescue of Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who is in a political hot soup after his “khoon ki dalali” comment related to surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army after a nod from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Immediately after DGMO Lt Gen Ranbir Singh announced the surgical strikes carried out by the Indian Army, Rahul Gandhi had called them the “only worthy thing Modi had done since becoming the prime minister.

Speaking in support of Rahul Gandhi, the senior lawyer decided to go on an offensive and took on BJP president Amit Shah.

Jinke khilaaf murder ke case ho, jinhone jail ki hava khaayi ho vo batayenge ki Rahul ji ke mool mein khot hai? (People who have murder cases against them and have been to jail, are they pointing out faults in Rahul ji’s roots?) Stop putting up these posters claiming credit, it was Army who should be hailed so stop this politics.

The Congress vice president faced severe criticism after his comments from the ruling party members and the general public on Twitter. Former Congress member and current Rajya Sabha MP from BJP, Subramanian Swamy, said, “Rahul Gandhi either has had no education or should get a mental check-up done for using these words against the Prime Minister”.

While the Congress’ response to the surgical strikes has been conflicting, the general consensus has been in support of the government’s decision.

On the lines of Modi’s speech in Kerala, Sibal said that the people of Pakistan are patients of a cancer named terrorism. India has to, therefore, provide chemotherapy to it.

Pakistan is a patient and terrorism is the cancer cells in its body; India wants that patient to be healthy, so will have to give chemotherapy. They said that we wanted to take this surgical strike to people, which show how they have politicised the matter.

However, he then turned his gun back on the ruling party saying it was the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is responsible for the creation of Jaish-e-Mohammad. The Uri attacks would not have happened, he said, had Masood Azhar not been released in 1999.

Aaj ye hamle hote hi nahi agar Jaish-e-Mohammad paida nahi hota, aur use paida BJP ne kiya, Masood Azhar ko riha kiya. Aapko kya zarurat thi Pakistan jaakar Birthday manane ki? (These attacks would not have happened had Jaish-e-Mohammad not been established. The BJP gave birth to JeM when they released Masood Azhar from custody. Why did you (PM Modi) have to go to Pakistan to greet Pakistani PM Nawaz Sharif on his birthday?

He mentioned Modi’s surprise visit to Pakistan on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s birthday last year.

Law and Justice Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad dismissed Sibal’s arguments saying comments like his only help in increasing BJP’s voter base:

People like Kapil Sibal and Digvijay Singh should keep on speaking; the more they speak the more our vote share increases. Within Congress party, loyalty towards Rahul is more than loyalty towards the country. Today’s press conference was more of an embarrassment than Rahul Gandhi’s comment. What does Congress mean by saying that BJP made Jaish-e-Mohammad? You know who will be happy with this comment? ISI.
